We finally had a snow day after years without snow. It is even more magical now that it is baby’s first snow as well. We only got to take her out for a couple minutes but it was still a lot of fun! There is just something undeniably magical about a snow day. This time it was even better because it was a surprise snow. I was not expecting it and I woke up to a beautiful white blanket covering the driveway. It was a welcome break from the ordinary routine and a simple joy!
The Calm Before the Storm
Snow days typically begin with a sense of anticipation. This time it was anticipation at work with everyone trying to get all the medications made and delivered to patients before the bad weather (btw I am a pharmacist by profession). Today I woke up to the soft sound of falling snow, and before even opening the curtains, you check your phone for the long-awaited message: “Snow day!” There’s a thrill in that moment. It’s a reminder that, sometimes, nature has the power to alter our plans and offer us a day of pure freedom. My favorite part of the early morning snow was the silence and brilliance of the bright lights.
The Beauty of Snow
One of the most enchanting aspects of a snow day is the way the world looks transformed. Again the familiar streets, trees, and bushes take on a whole new look. Everything is covered in a white layer, making even the mundane seem magical. The street light was still on from the night before and the snow was glittering under the light. Snow has the remarkable ability to change a landscape, turning a regular neighborhood into a winter wonderland.
As I stepped outside, there was a refreshing stillness in the air. The only sound I could hear was the occasional sound of a car and the crunch of the snow beneath my feet. For a moment, the world feels quieter, slower, and more serene.
Outdoor Fun and Play
Although my mom and my mother-in-law would not agree, it is important to take the young outdoors who want to simply indulge in a bit of winter fun. My baby is too young but my favorite memories of living in the mountains are snow day outdoor activities. Building snowmen, creating snow angels, or a good old-fashioned snowball fight can bring out the inner child in anyone or can get you in trouble with your mom as it did me.
When I was younger, my friends and I used to take an old boogie board from the beach, sledding down a hill or strapping on snowshoes for a winter hike. Snow days present the perfect opportunity to reconnect with nature, embrace the chill, and enjoy the refreshing air.
Cozy Indoors (this is more what I did this year)
This year, I had to work but of course a snow day is never complete without the comfort of being indoors even if that includes working. Since the outside world was covered in snow, it’s the perfect excuse to stay inside and finally start that book you’ve been meaning to read, binge-watch a TV series you’ve been putting off, or finally taking a nice long bath while dad takes care of baby.
Snow days allow me to slow down and savor life’s simple pleasures. There’s a special warmth in being inside while the cold snow falls outside. I love turning on the fireplace and even trying out a new creative project—writing, drawing, knitting, or cooking something new.
I am lucky and have family with me and friends who live nearby. We decided to all meat up and play some board games. A bunch of my friends brought over some homemade soup and it was such a cozy setting. The lack of outside distractions means more time spent together, savoring the moment and creating new traditions.
I am not a fan of living in a city where it snows all the time, but once in a while snow days are a gift, allowing moments of play and relaxation. We were able to take our baby in the snow and mesmerize her with the beauty of the outdoors. I cannot wait until next year when she is able to walk and hopefully enjoy the snow even more. Here’s to hoping for more magical moments in the future.
