In my teens, it was acne and oily skin and even now in my late twenties, I face the same skin issues along with fine lines and wrinkles.
I know there is not a perfect solution to all skin concerns but I have curated a list of my favorite things that I think will work for most!
1. Hydration
Always stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin looking healthy and refreshed. I try to drink about 8-12 glasses of water per day.
2. Exfoliation
Frequently exfoliate to dispose of useless pores and skin cells that usually make your skin feel rough and bumpy. I usually exfoliate my skin once to twice a week.
3. Sunscreen
Honestly, I myself was skeptical and never used to wear sunscreen, but the more I looked into the more it made sense that EVERYONE should be wearing sunscreen daily. SPF protects against sunburn caused primarily by UVB rays, but make sure that your sunscreen protects against UVA rays as well by choosing products that provide both UVA and UVB protection. Make sure you read the directions for your sunscreen as well i.e (how often to apply, water resistance, etc) I am going to link my favorite sunscreens that I have used the past!
4. Sleep
A sleepy mind and body appear on the skin, making the skin rough and dull. On the other hand, a good rest will wake you up refreshed and your skin will repair and heal while you sleep. The increased blood flow and collagen production all happen while you’re getting a great night’s sleep. Another hidden secret is SILK pillowcases! The innate smoothness of silk pillowcases allows our skin to glide over the pillow and reduce irritation while we toss and turn at night and also reduces wrinkles. The best part is, they are not even too expensive!
5. Healthy Diet
A healthy diet can have a positive effect on your complexion. Certain nutrients, such as vitamins A, C, and E, and minerals, such as zinc and selenium, are essential for maintaining healthy skin. Vitamin A, found in foods such as sweet potatoes, carrots, and spinach, helping to regulate cell metabolism. Vitamin C, found in citrus fruits, berries and leafy greens, protects the skin from environmental damage and promotes collagen production. Vitamin E, found in nuts, seeds and avocados, moisturizes the skin and protects against free radicals. Zinc and selenium, found in foods such as seafood, nuts, and eggs, protect the skin from sun damage and promote healthy cell growth.
6. Gentle Cleanser
Use a gentle, natural cleanser to remove dirt and makeup, and avoid harsh chemicals that can irritate your skin. I cleanse my skin regularly, day and night. Keeping your pores clean can help prevent and treat problems like acne and prep your face for other skin care products. My current favorite cleansers are Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser, La Roche-Posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Cleanser, and Youth to the People Superfood Antioxidant Cleanser.
7. Moisturize
Apply a moisturizer to help keep your skin hydrated and smooth. Moisturizing your skin and help prevent dryness, protect from the sun, and help soothe sensitive skin. I use First Aid Beauty: Ultra Repair Cream especially in the winter when my skin gets very dry and in the warmer months my favorite last year was CeraVe AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion SPF 30
8. Pay Attention!
Pay attention to any signs of skin issues and take steps to address them early on, such as using a spot treatment for acne or seeing a dermatologist for eczema or any patches of skin that just do not seem to go away.
9. Limit Shower Time
Okay this is one that I have the most trouble with. I love taking long, hot, showers and baths especially in the winter time. Hot showers and prolonged exposure to hot water can strip oils from your skin. It can also cause your skin to become red, irritated and inflamed. I am slowly trying go get myself to take warm showers and even cold showers in the summertime.
10. Self Care
Have you ever noticed that right when you are about to have your big presentation or go to an important event, you get the biggest zit? Well, it is because your body produces cortisol in response to stress which can lead to oily skin which leads to clogged pores and acne. Practicing self care techniques to reduce stress can positively affect your skin. Try to practice stress-management techniques, such as meditation or yoga, to reduce the impact of stress on your skin.
