Salt Dough Decorations
Salt Dough is a dough that is used to make decorations for Christmas. Think of a play-doh that you can bake and it hardens to make an ornament that you can decorate for the Christmas tree. I made them with my family this year and it was super fun but probably more for older children.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose bleached flour
- 1 cup salt
- 1 cup cold water
Step 1: Prepare Dough
Preheat the oven to 250 degrees F . Combine flour and salt in a bowl. Add water a little at a time to ensure it is play-doh consistency and not too runny or sticky. Line a pan with a baking sheet/aluminum foil.
Step 2: Knead Dough
Knead dough for 10 minutes. Wrap and let rest for 20 minutes. Refrigerate before cutting shapes to get a better print.
Step 3: Prepare Decorations
Roll out to a thickness of 1/4 inch. You can dust your hands and then press into the dough and cut around the hand to make the shape desired for the ornament or you can cut shapes with cookie cutters.
Step 4: Decorate and punch hole in each ornament
Transfer each of the ornaments onto the prepared baking sheet. You can use a fork or a toothpick to make a hole in each ornament.
Step 5: Bake
Bake in the preheated oven until dry and hard. For my ornaments it took about 1 hour but depending on the thickness it can take up to 2-3 hours. Allow to cool completely and then you can decorate with glitter and paint.
For me, this is a great way to bond with your family and do something hands on for the holidays!
